Some of the most important figures in United States history have been members of the Episcopal Church. This figure includes 11 Presidents of the United States as well as a plethora of wealthy industrialists. The early Episcopal Church traces its roots back to the Anglican Church, or the Church of England. The beginnings of this split came during the American Revolutionary War in the late 1700’s. For millenia, churches and other religious institutions have used the power of publication, arts, and a calligraphic state in order to assert authority over their domain. In the early 1800’s the Episcopal Church was beginning to forge its own identity, completely separate from the Church of England. It is my belief that the publication seen in my exhibit, A Pastor's Plea for Evangelical Catholic Truth, is a perfect example of the Episcopal Church’s attempt to distinguish itself from the Anglican church by establishing a foundation of religious publications.
