Title
Hopes and Fears; or, Scenes from the Life of a Spinster
Description
This novel is set in the Victorian era, which centers on the lives of people who live on the margins of society. The main protagonist, Honora Charlecote, a disabled spinster, devotes her life to taking care of the orphaned children of her distant cousin. Themes of education, moral instruction, and religious devotion thread throughout the narrative as the story follows four generations. Yonge writes about the hopes and fears of the children and adults across different classes, genders, and educational backgrounds, and all of these emotions center on Honora as she navigates life.
