The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted my life in ways I never expected. In March of 2020 we were told that instruction at CSU would be suspended for two weeks due to Covid-19, but I never expected the remainder of our semester would be converted to all virtual learning. After we were sent home for the semester, I began working at a builder’s supply store which was considered essential work, and the things I saw while working were very surprising. During my time working from March until August, I saw so many people building decks, chicken coops, and anything else you could think of. People were so bored during the quarantine that thousands of people began doing home projects. Another thing that was different about my time working during the quarantine was wearing a mask every day, and the fight I received when I asked people to wear a mask. At the beginning of the quarantine, it seemed as though people did not want to wear a at any cost. Thankfully by the end of the quarantine most of the people I interacted with began wearing their masks and complying to our safety guidelines. Working during the Covid-19 pandemic was very challenging, but I’m proud that I was able to continue working during the Quarantine. "Good," I think to myself, "if the governor of Georgia isn't going to make a mandate, at least the businesses are." I think it's a good idea, the science has shown it is a good idea, but I still felt an overwhelming anxiety going to Walmart today. How would people react? Would they fall in line? If not for the right reasons, at least because it is mandatory? As I walked up to Walmart on Victory Drive, I saw a young girl, probably in her early twenties, standing under a canopy. It was at least 95 degrees out, "What a miserable job" I thought to myself. I am not a confrontational person so with masks having become more of a political stance than a health protector, I worried how people would react to Walmart's new rule. As I looked around, I saw many people with masks coming and going from the store which eased my mind quite a bit. Suddenly, I hear an older man scream an expletive at that poor Walmart employee before storming off back into the parking lot, he didn't have a mask and wouldn't be allowed in the store. This was the reason for the anxiety. It wasn't directed toward me but my heart hurt for that employee. The anxiety I have been feeling stems from acknowledging that the issues surrounding Coronavirus are being mishandled by the media and politicians, why is the health of our most vulnerable citizens now political? Even here in Columbus, a city I have grown to adore, we are experiencing a harmful division, caused by a simple piece of cloth. The tensions in the community feel as if they're always about to boil over and today, in this short confrontation, it did. This shouldn't be a time of division it should be a time in which we come together as a community. These essential workers in our area are unfairly receiving the outbursts of frustration from customers. Not only is it not fair, it makes me not want to be in public, I am witnessing how truly awful people will treat each other because they themselves are anxious, stressed, and confused. I am currently a junior at Columbus State where I am majoring in History, Secondary Education. I am 27 years old and have lived right here in Columbus, GA for all of my life. This is however only my third full semester at CSU thanks to the hefty amount of time I spent bouncing back and forth between community colleges and full-time jobs as I tried to figure out what I wanted to do with my life during my early twenties. Up until just last month I was working full time at Double Churches Middle School as a paraprofessional, but now because of my school schedule I have shifted down to just subbing three days a week (it’s a sweet gig). In this post I am going to give you a look at my experience of being a “non-traditional” aged college student during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. It was early March when I first heard the news that Atlanta had just confirmed their first positive case of COVID-19. I was walking down the hall with 3 of my students that I was responsible for. My heart sank a bit as we continued toward our 3rd period class. I knew that the remainder of my day would be spent skewering twitter and internet forums looking for information on this virus that we all knew so little about at the time. The more I searched the more I realized that finding positive or reassuring takes about why I shouldn’t worry about all of this, was going to be tough. I had to find something positive that I could hang on to so I could get through the rest of the day. You see, news like this hit me differently than it might hit most people. Being someone who since the age of 13 has suffered from a severe anxiety disorder, mostly centered around a deathly fear of becoming ill (hypochondriasis), I knew that I was about to face another big challenge. My plans for 2020 at the time were to finish up the school year with work, take a heavy load of courses over the summer while working a bit part time to save up some money for the fall and winter where I knew I wouldn’t be able to work full time because of my course schedule. I also had big plans to buy a ring and be engaged by the end of year. But just a week after the confirmed case in Atlanta, we received the news that Muscogee County Schools would be shutting down. “it’s only until the end of March” they said, but by that time, we all knew that we would probably not see each other again for a long time. This news was tough on me, as it really started to set in that this year where I had so many big plans was not going to go as I thought. As someone who spends majority of his free/alone time watching sports, going to the movies, and spending time with my girlfriend and close friends, my schedule quickly became wide open. Luckily my past issues with anxiety had prepared me for something like this. I knew that I had to come up with a routine and I had to do it fast or I would fall into a bad place. I sat down and mapped out what my schedule every day would look like. 8:00am- get up and exercise. This usually consisted of running/jogging about 5 miles around my neighborhood. 10:00am I would lock myself down and work on all of my assignments that were due for the day. A huge shout out to Dr. Banks for keeping me busy with a really fun and interesting mini-mester course on the Histories of Vandalism. I would wrap up around 2:00pm and allot myself some free time to work on a project or play video games. I’ll admit, Call of Duty Warzone helped me from completely losing my sanity at times. It may sound a bit childish at first but having this game that everyone seemed to be hooked on at the time allowed me to connect with some very old and close friends that I had drifted apart from over the years, just due to life and our busy schedules. It gave us an outlet to vent our fears and frustrations about what was going on in the world with each other. It gave us just a little something to look forward to every day, which we all needed. If I made it to 4:00pm I knew the rest of the day would be a breeze as I wound it down by spending time with family. We would do things like eat at the same table every night, find tv series to watch together, and have game nights with each other. It was a refreshing step back from the post-modern family lifestyle that we had become so accustomed to. There were absolutely negatives along the way in those 5 months that we spent locked in our homes not knowing if or when things may start going back to some type of normalcy. There were plenty of breaking points. Fear that my job would call me and inform me that I had been laid off, fear that a loved one would fall ill or lose their job, and plenty of other fears all took their toll on me, but I leaned heavy on my faith and family, and was blessed enough not to see any of those things I feared happen. I believe that this horrible year has helped me become a stronger person mentally as I faced another huge challenge in overcoming the anxiety that I have battled for so long. It helped me become a stronger person spiritually and helped make my personal relationships grow stronger with those I love. I consider myself extremely lucky that what I’ve written here today is all that I had to deal with. I know that so many have been affected in much more drastic ways that make my struggles pale in comparison. My heart is with those people as we all try and adapt to a new normal way of life and face this unsure future that is standing ahead of us. These are homemade masks my wife and I made during the COVID 19 pandemic. At the beginning of the pandemic there was a lot of problems with supply of several resources. Hand sanitizer and toilet paper are the big ones, but there was also a shortage of rubber gloves, meat, and medical facemasks. People started buying out all these things, so they were impossible to get. When the Surgeon General said everyone should wear a mask there was a problem: The only masks you could find were expensive ones made by people trying to take advantage of the shortage. We bought a pack (white one in the picture on the bottom) and they were horrible. They shrank, were paper thin, and were too small. not wanting to spend 20$-40$ on overpriced masks we did not know were going to be good: we decided to make them ourselves. We went out and bought cotton and flannel cloth and elastic bands and pulled out our sewing machine, pins, and thread. We cut the cloth into even squares—about 5” by 9”—which was more time consuming than we anticipated. We had to start the actual sewing the next day. We pinned three pieces of cloth together—two pieces of cotton and the flannel on the outside, and sewed the edges together except for a corner. We attached the elastic in this process as well. Then, we turned it inside out so the flannel was in the middle, as it was the filter, and ironed it so it folded over a couple times. Then we re-sewed it all together, this time adding the pleats on the sides. The whole process took several hours, as we made about 18 masks (we bought way more material than we needed!), and it was a slow process at first. In the end we were able to make lots of mask for very cheap. We ended up making 2 batches when the first ones were too small for me. The problem with these types of masks was you had to not use them more than once and wash them regularly. If you dry them in a typical drier they shrink a lot (2nd from the bottom in the picture). In the second batch we even picked out nice patterns to customize our masks (top mask in the picture) These masks are something we use every day and quite worth the effort! The pandemic has sucked a lot, but making these things ourselves was a great way to spend some time in quarantine. I will be teaching seventeen first graders, and if that was not daunting enough, I will be doing it during Covid-19. Thankfully, I will not have to worry about teaching both online and in person students, since the whole class is in person, but it will not be the same as when I taught before. In the past, my professors encouraged and expected us to teach with manipulatives and materials, or to let the students work in groups to encourage collaboration. However, with this pandemic, the rules have changed. I cannot bring in props, artifacts, or even snacks. I am not supposed interchange paper assignments with the students or let them work in groups. All these changes go against a lot of research and teachings that I have encountered in my last three years in the early childhood program. Next semester I will be a student teacher, in charge of my own classroom, but I cannot implement lessons and classroom experiences I have been planning and trained for because of the pandemic. I hope that there will be a vaccine soon because I fear for the pandemic generation of learners. I am saddened that they will be missing out on experiments, experiences, field trips, projects, and simply meeting with friends at lunch. My heart especially breaks for elementary learners because out of all the grade levels, I feel that online learning hinders them the most. For three years I have been taught that elementary learners need play, authentic assessments, collaboration with peers, a safe and inviting classroom environment, and more techniques and methods, that can be modified for social distancing or online learners, but will not be as impactful or as effective. However, to not end on a doom and gloom note, I do know that there are many teachers who have found and shared creative ideas and lessons for online teaching or a socially distanced classroom. In typical elementary teacher fashion, I have already turned to Pinterest and found fun games and activities that do not require looking at a screen all day. I am also working on modifying my lesson ideas so they can be implemented in a socially distanced classroom. Title A name given to the resource Artwork During Covid-19 Description An account of the resource These are original paintings done during quarantine by my cousin Mason McGraw, my girlfriend Hannah Heberlig, my brother Zeke Bray, and myself Landon Bray. I wanted to share some of the art we created during the quarantine to show some of the more positive aspects of a pandemic. Those positive aspects being the realization that we should spend more time doing the things we love and being around the people we love. The four paintings are part of a collection of more than 20 pieces done by myself and many of my friends and family.
