The context of which was a little disheartening, with many of our elderly family members living in Cuba, and with Cuba not having the greatest initiative to provide vaccinations to it's people, we wanted to meet and be with who we could, before anything could possibly happen to them as these were very uncertain times for people in first world countries, even more so for people in 3rd world struggling countries like Cuba. The airport was empty, and the plane was empty as well. It was a reprieve from the usual grievances of a crowded airport but somber within the context of Covid-19. Text Any textual data included in the document Living through Covid-19 Was an interesting experience at first, that slowly turned into one of intense boredom mixed with bursts of fear. When it came to our country, my friends and family thought nothing of it. It didn’t stick even after school was suspended for a week. Even after a month had passed it still didn’t seem real. A part of me was relieved school was suspended and it didn’t seem to be coming back. Then that’s when everything started to get worse and worse. Relatives started to get sick after minor excursions, the isolation from everything and everyone minus my siblings/parents, and tragedy striking our neighbors/friends. After the wife of the elderly couple I worked for passed, was when everything truly started to wear me down. Everything just started to slow down, with each day seeming like weeks. I felt like everything I did was pointless and repetitive. It was just a routine of watching television/Youtube, eating, workout, showering, and sleeping. Day in, day out. Thankfully, however, I was able to keep the loneliness at bay by talking to family/friends over Facetime. My dogs, also helped me stay sane through these events. Masks were worn as people were afraid of this deadly disease coming into our country as cases were spiking in cities like New York. I was in my junior year of high school when we were told that school would be shut down for ten days. Those ten days went on to be the nation's lockdown. It was hard to accept the changes life was offering as people were terrified. Grocery stores were sold out of necessities, people scrambled to get home on flights, gas was low, social distancing was implemented, and healthcare workers were on the line of a rough battle. I was personally challenged with the new methods of learning as schools were online. It was interesting to see how students and educators had to adapt and learn together. Now in 2022 classes are primarily conducted online with homework, documents, communication, and even test. Many policies came out during the time, but one of the biggest changes for me is mask mandates. I wear a mask whenever I go out. Policies about masks have changed a few times. Currently, wearing a mask is not mandatory. However, I am living with my nephew, who is seven years old. I do not want him to be sick, so I am wearing a mask all the time just in case. Before COVID-19, I lived in the dorms at Auburn, walked freely to all my classes, and dined in at restaurants freely. After COVID-19 restrictions were put in place, most of my classes became virtual and the ones that were in person, I had to wear a mask and had to social distance. It was difficult for me to listen and understand my professors while they wore masks. The online instruction was either live video or recorded videos, with no opportunity to ask questions. I discovered that I do not learn as well from online instruction. Since the dining rooms were closed, I had to order my food ahead online for takeout. We also noticed that some of the food items and household cleaning supplies were not available in stores or online. A few examples were chicken meat, Lysol, and toilet paper. Prior to COVID, my family and I had planned to travel to Okinawa, Japan to visit my mother’s family and enjoy a nice vacation on a tropical island. Due to travel restrictions, we had to cancel our flights and stay home. My great grandmother, who we wanted to visit, is 97 years old, and it is important to us to connect and spend time with our longest living family members. Before covid-19 I played sports and traveled for my sports very often. So for my 11th-grade season basketball was very normal we traveled to many away games we had a normal practice. During home games, we were able to have people sit on the bleachers that were courtside. Then when covid happened they put the bleaches up and nobody was allowed to be downstairs during basketball games. When covid first happened basketball ended and we were not allowed to do anything. I also had an AAU season that I usually played in after the high school season every year, but since covid happened my AAU season had been canceled just like. With me having nothing to do I had to go get a job at Publix. So for the next few months, I was working at Publix. Eventually, my senior year came around and basketball season had started. Now things were totally different during basketball. Many things changed during practice and during our travels to away games. During the start of the season, we were not allowed to play five on five during practice. Then when we traveled for away games we could only have one person to a seat on the bus, we had to wear a mask on the bus, and sometimes we even had to wear a mask on the bench. Covid had changed our whole schedule for summer league, fall league, conditioning, and our regular season. Text Any textual data included in the document When the lockdowns of COVID-19 began, I was a server and bartender for a restaurant in downtown Columbus, Georgia. I remember being scared and concerned about my income, and for the income of my friends and coworkers. I was lucky because my husband is active-duty military and is considered essential, so he was going to keep receiving his pay no matter what. I remember the day Georgia went into a full lockdown. My husband and I were going on a walk at the golf course near our home, and I received a notification on my phone with news. We had been planning on doing our grocery shopping like usual after our walk, and we were worried that people were going to rush to the grocery stores and clear the shelves of necessary items. We calmly walked home, changed, and went to the grocery store not knowing what to expect. When we arrived it was fairly calm, it seemed we had missed the crowd. We picked up the very few items we needed (it’s just my husband, myself, and our two cats) and got to the check out line. I remember looking around and realizing just how crazy the situation at the grocery store had become in the short time we had been there. We wished the grocery clerks our best and told them we hoped that people treated them with kindness during this understandably difficult time and went home. During the lockdown, my husband and I spent a lot of time together taking (masked) walks, playing video games, and just enjoying each other’s company. The picture I’ve attached is of my husband before we took our first walk of lockdown. He’s in his gas mask and weighted vest from work. During our walk, I remember the folks playing golf loving his gas mask, and we put some smiles on people’s faces and got a few laughs, too. It was nice to hear laughter during that confusing time. It began to plague the world in March 2020, and has still not stopped here in October 2021. Many select items were consistently out of stock in grocery stores. Many restaurants closed to indoor dining and shifted to online ordering and take-out only, while some closed completely, thus going out of business. Schools, from elementary all the way up to postsecondary, closed to in-person learning and shifted to meeting virtually, the vast majority of students and teachers using Zoom for instruction. The large number of students and teachers suddenly utilizing Zoom led to the system crashing on multiple occasions, causing instruction to become asynchronous and causing students’ attendance to be counted through their completion of assignments. After a while, schools in select states began to reopen, giving students a choice to either remain virtual or attend school in person. The students who chose face-to-face instruction were required, however, to wear face masks the entire time they were on campus and not in their cars. This led a considerable number of students to purchase face shields that allowed them to breathe fresh air while preventing them from breathing on other people. Additionally, particularly at the very beginning of the pandemic, grocery stores required all of their customers to wear face masks while shopping inside the store, and also to maintain a physical distance of 6 feet or more. In an effort to ensure this physical distancing, the stores had arrows taped to the floor in each aisle that directed customers as to which way they were to walk down each aisle. People were also afraid to do so much as cough or sneeze in public, because if they did, they were guaranteed to get looks from people around them, causing it to become shameful to cough or sneeze. I was one of many front-line essential workers, as I worked in the retail industry during the pandemic, specifically for Publix Super Markets, Inc. I therefore saw firsthand the supply shortage that plagued stores, and I had many customers come to me telling me that they couldn’t find an item or items that they had been buying for 20 years, and they would ask me if the store would be getting any of those items any time soon. I always then asked those who oversaw deliveries, and they would almost always tell me that they had no idea when those items would be coming in next. That was a hard pill to swallow for both me and the customer, because they weren’t able to get something they needed, and I hate to see customers leave the store unsatisfied. I along with everyone prayed that supply would soon return to normal and that there would be no more large empty spaces on store shelves, and also that the pandemic itself would come to end soon, allowing everyday life to return to normal as well. Text Any textual data included in the document The Covid-19 Pandemic started when I was only a junior in high school and I was a cashier at my town’s neighboring Piggly Wiggly. I remember the day we got out of school early because some cases were spotted here in the United States. It was only supposed to be for about 2 weeks, but this was not the case. Covid-19 ruined my junior and senior year. We were excited about junior and senior prom, and we were robbed of those memories. I was excited about homecoming and running for homecoming queen my senior year, I was robbed of this opportunity. We were excited about going to Mexico for our senior trip, but we were robbed of those memories as well. As our school closed, we lost memories and valuable time with our classmates. Dealing with curfews, shutdowns, many businesses being closed, and walking around with masks and other precautions was a drastic change because just the day before everything was normal. Being a cashier during a global pandemic was not the best experience. My mother always reminded me that I did not have to work but I never liked to ask her for money, and I was going to college soon, so I wanted to save money. Every day I went home I was afraid of spreading this awful virus to my loved ones and especially my niece who was 2 years old at the time. My mother is a nurse and she tested positive at the beginning of the pandemic as well as my brother. The virus was something new and many deaths were occurring, I was afraid of losing my mom and my brother. I was afraid and I still am today. Covid-19 is a terrible virus and I wish that this pandemic would have never come about but now it’s too late. We must live with it and hope that it ends and live our lives the best and safest ways possible.
